Welcome from President Buxton

Durham Technical Community College serves nearly 18,000 students annually across six campusJB-Buxton-3x4-cropped (1) locations as a workforce development talent pipeline for our region. Since 1961, Durham Tech has provided high-quality, affordable, and accessible education as an open-door institution. We offer a pathway to success for thousands of Triangle residents and have helped power the economy by educating skilled workers for employers across the region.

As a community college, we pride ourselves on our ability to shift quickly to meet the region’s needs. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic earlier this year, Durham Tech launched the Back-to-Work Initiative aimed at connecting unemployed, underemployed, and individuals impacted by COVID-19 to short-term credentials that can provide access to in-demand jobs. Durham County government has been a critical partner by providing grant funding for local nonprofits to work with residents to enroll and complete these courses.

Durham Tech has long enjoyed a strong partnership with Durham County and our surrounding communities. Thanks to the support of the Durham County commissioners, recent high school graduates from Durham are eligible for the Durham Tech Promise scholarship, which provides up to $1,000 per year in tuition funding for up to two years. Nearly 700 students were awarded the scholarship from Durham County in the 2018-19 school year.

The College has more than 100 credit certificate, diploma, or degree programs, as well as guaranteed admissions pathways to eligible students interested in institutions such as UNC-Chapel Hill, N.C. State or N.C A&T University. We have several program partnerships and university transfer options with nearby North Carolina Central University. The College also offers Continuing Education courses and programs for students wanting to acquire new skills relevant to their current or aspiring careers or personal interests.

Finally, we work with new and expanding industry to offer customized training programs to benefit their expanding workforce in the Triangle region. Durham Tech assists companies in the life sciences, information technology, advanced manufacturing, and health care sectors, among others, with specific training to support their workforce needs.

Durham Tech serves to support the residents, companies, and communities of Durham and the Triangle region to ensure individual opportunity, upward mobility, and regional prosperity. We look forward to working with you to support your company’s ambitions and our region’s commitment to equitably shared prosperity.

All my best,

J.B. Buxton
